20th-Jul-2008 12:54 am - 29. August: Osage County by Tracy Letts (138 pages)
This is quite possible the best play I've read all year, if not the best play I've EVER read. It went beyond my expectations and then some. I recently borrowed it from a roommate on a whim, and I was greatly impressed.

The dialogue is written with a skill I haven't had the privilege to witness in some time, and each and ever character is genuinely compelling. I was reminded of my own (slightly) dysfunctional childhood in the South, and the play truly spoke to me.

I would love to see it in production, or better yet, to work on it.

20th-Jul-2008 02:25 am - I'm running out of titles
Bits and bobs from the week thus far:

1. Watched Team America: World Police on Saturday, which I'm not sure I was really ready for. I enjoyed it, but I also spent about 25% of the movie staring at the screen in mute horror, so make of that what you will.

Also movie-related: I may be hitting a movie this weekend, and to be honest I'd rather see Hellboy II than The Dark Knight. I'm well aware that The Dark Knight is supposed to be awesomecakes, a redefinition of the superhero movie, Heath Ledger's finest performance, et cetera, and I'm sure I'll enjoy it once I do see it, but it also looks to be a two-hour-long symphony in the key of DEEEEEATH. Hellboy II would actually be, you know, fun.

Also, SPOILERS for The Dark Knight )

Oooh. That's a thought. What would such villians as Ivy and Mr. Freeze and their ilk look like in Christopher Nolan's Dark!Batmanverse? Because I tell you, if Nolan decided to bring in The Animated Series' Clayface I don't think I'd be able to watch without crying.

Clayface gave me fucking NIGHTMARES. Shut up.

Tangent: I vote that, if this trend of 150-minute movies where every second contains something crucial to the plot continues, I cast my vote to reinstate intermissions at the movies. Because I don't want to wriggle there in abdomen-straining agony out of fear of missing the best part of the movie, that's why.

2. So I was going to finally cave and download "Yes" from Viva la Vida - yes, random-arse "Chinese Sleep Chant" and all. Only it turns out that, on iTunes, you have to download the entire album to get "Yes". It's not available as an individual track.

You keep just missing your chances, Coldplay.

But never fear! My iTunes allowance is not wasted, for I've discovered that the audio versions of the burninated Doctor Who serials are available as audiobooks in iTunes! Now it's just a matter of whether it's Power of the Daleks (I've got Evil of the Daleks already), The Highlanders, or The Web of Fear that I shall splurge on. Troughton on mah iPod, hurrah!

3. On a lark, I bought a fedora at Target yesterday. It was cheap, it was black, it was pinstriped, it was the only one left, and I've wanted a fedora for a long time.

Now I just have to figure out what I'm going to wear it to. I'm tempted to put on the Joe Cocker cover of "You Can Leave Your Hat On" and dance about in high heels and underwear, but then I remember that I live in a house with other people in it.

4. Ficcing still coming slowly, but I'm not nearly as depressed about it as I used to be. More apathetic than anything, really, which...isn't a good feeling either, but is better than being sad and self-pitying.

Of course, ficcing's sure to slow anyway, because I've got actual things to do at work again and, for the past week or so, I've had little to do at work and thus have been able to engage in desultory ficcing in my off hours. I may not have such spare time for a few days.

5. Doctor Who fan-natter; specifically, thoughts and meta-ish contemplations on Planet of the Spiders. )

My laptop's battery is starting to go, and it's late, and I'm tired, so the other stuff I'd planned to talk about will have to wait for the morning. Good night to all.

20th-Jul-2008 11:43 am - Update
I'm back!

Sorry, my boss went out of state on holiday, leaving me in charge and today (Sunday) is my first day off since Monday. I also had a minor health scare, after I donated blood on Wednesday (I felt funny and couldn't think clearly for a few hours). My mum is worried (and admittedly, so am I) that I might have some problems with my thyroid. That or diabetes. Well shit. (I have a family history of type 2 and a related condition.)

So I'm going to have to change my diet, I just know it, even if nothing is wrong just yet (which it probably isn't, because I'm mostly fine). Which means it's probably a good thing I overcooked that chocolate slice I made a few days ago, because I really shouldn't be eating it right now. Especially not smothered in icing. :(

So I'll have to find something new to cook for TV Night on Tuesday. Right now I'm thinking ANZAC biscuits with a bit of icing on the top. Sounds good to me!

I've missed the internet! I have heaps of emails waiting in my inbox for me. But I have to get off now. :P It's nearly 1:30 now, and I've wasted enough time for just now. Off to do some baking. More later.

The Dracula Dossier - (7/19) - James Reese 343p

The Dracula Dossier (published in October 2008) answers the age old question:  Who was Jack the Ripper?  And what if he were acquainted with Bram Stoker?

120 years after the brutal Whitechapel  murders, James Reese posits a theory as to the reason behind them.

The first half of the book reads like a biography of Bram Stoker.  The Dracula Dossier is written in the same style as Dracula, told through letters, journal entries and newspaper clippings.  Reese excellently captures the mood of the late 1800's in his writing and with the amount of detail woven into the letters and journal entries.  He skillfully creates an atmosphere that kept me turning the pages for more.

At about the mid-way point, the Jack the Ripper aspect of the book really came into play.  What Reese has done brilliantly is to weave the facts with his fiction.  The known information of the Jack the Ripper case is used and events explained as Reese's Stoker experienced them.  He puts forth an imaginative theory.

Unfortunately, for me it just didn't work.  Without a spoiler, Reese suggests a super-natural aspect to the "Ripper."  Though the writing is great and the theory interesting, it just didn't work for me and I really struggled to finish the book.  This crossroads of the story took a book that was rich in historical detail and accuracy, and turned it into a dark fantasy, which ultimately left me disappointed.  It was a great idea, with a fascinating start.  I wish it had taken a different turn.

The first half gets a 5 the second half a 1, giving this book a 2.5/5

61. Key Witch - (7/12) - Robert Tacoma 217p

The third book in the "Keys" series.  Fun.

60. New Moon - (7/9) - Stephenie Meyer 565p

I actually liked this better than Twilight.

19th-Jul-2008 04:54 pm - Anglican vs. other Liturgical sects
Hi all,

I'm seeking to understand the basic theological/traditional differences between the Anglican Church vs. the other big liturgical churches (ie Lutheran, Catholic, Orthodox)

I was just hoping for a basic comparison. What sacraments are performed? What do the Anglicans make of Holy Tradition?  Is the Communion closed?  Are  Anglicans allowed to take the Communion at other churches/sects which have open Communion? Are women allowed to be ordained? What must a person do to become confirmed? Is joining the Anglican Church a conversion process, or just a "you agree with our doctrine" assurance?

Also, are there any Episcopal parishes in America that disagree with the current direction that their church is heading?

-- Thank you much!:-)
